Auckland University of Technology design student Sara Marshall has reimagined iconic logos as beautiful, hand-lettered designs – adding a personalised, accessible feel to the brands while retaining key elements of their identities.
Marshall describes the project, dubbed Brand by Hand, as “an experimental lettering project” that injects “the personal, hand-treated and flowery nature of hand lettering into the cold corporate world”.
Brand by Hand was inspired by two design trends. “Major brands such as Apple and Google have steered corporate graphic design towards a flat, minimalist style… Alongside this minimalist movement, there has been a huge rise in the popularity of hand lettering that, in contrast to minimalist ideals, is characterised by imperfections, texture and embellishment,” she says.
I think all the redesigned logos are brilliant, but my personal favourites are Skype, YouTube, Burger King and FedEx. I especially like how Marshall has kept the FedEx arrow!
